Welcome to Anthony’s at Highfield, a special part of Stanley surrounded in history. The Anthony home was built as part of the Van Diemen’s Land Company’s holding in Tasmania. This cottage was built using convict labour in 1828 to house the first farm supervisor Stephen Addey and then, after the establishment of the Highfield main house the cottage was used for other Company employees. Adolphus Schayer occupied the house until 1833. The VDL Company brought Schayer from Germany for expertise in Merino sheep. A substantial farm was developed on the property, but the Company suffered severe financial losses and was forced to lease Highfield in 1856. It was eventually sold in 1914 to the Ford family. The Anthony’s purchased this part of the property from the Fords in 1917 and from this point on it has remained in the Anthony family. Please phone us to book your accommodation in Stanley today.
